Can we make a cabin request?
We do accept cabin requests for first year campers, but we are unable to guarantee your request will be met. Requests depend on camper ages and grades and whether it matches up with the rest of the campers enrolled. We are normally able to meet first year requests, but we do not take requests in years beyond that. We also avoid putting too many people that know each other into the same cabin, as cliques can form when a disproportionate number of campers in one cabin know each other prior to arriving at camp. This can hamper our staff’s ability to develop independence, self-worth and life-long friendships in their cabin. The director is happy to discuss individual cases with parents. Do I have to be a member of the YMCA to come to this camp?
Nope! No membership is required to attend our camps though the YMCA is a great place for your whole family! Check out everything the YMCA of Greater Boston has to offer.
How does my camper select his activities for Camp?
Campers select their activity choices during the first evening of camp. The daytime schedule is made up of four activity periods. With the help of their counselor, each camper ranks the 10 activities they would like to participate in. A schedule is created based on these choices.
Will my child take part in swim lessons at Camp?
Yes, every child participates in an instructional swim class each day of regular activities. We use the YMCA instructional swim program, a proven swim training curriculum. Each camper takes a swim test at the start of the session and is placed in a swim level based on their abilities. A trained swim teacher instructs all campers.
How many times will my camper ride horses per week if they are registered for horseback?
Each camper receives a minimum of 6 hours and a maximum of 8 hours of instruction (weather permitting) per two week session.

What is the food like at Camp?
The food is wonderful here at camp! Our kitchen prepares fresh meals for our campers and takes tremendous pride in the food we produce. Three well-balanced meals are served every day at camp that are tasty and nutritious. An extensive breakfast/salad bar is available at all meals with alternatives to the main course. Sun butter (no peanuts!) and jelly can be available for those who do not wish to eat the main entrées. Vegetarian alternatives are available for our vegetarian campers and staff. Everyone loves Darryl and his team for the great food and energy the kitchen staff brings to every meal!
How do you handle food allergies at Camp?
We are able to accommodate some food allergies for our campers. If your child has any dietary allergy or restrictions, please contact the Camp Office. After a conversation determining that we can manage your child's food allergy at camp, we will create a plan worked out between parents, the camp administration, and the chef.
What time is pick-up and drop-off?
Arrivals are on Sundays between 1 pm and 3 pm. Departures are on Saturdays between 9:30 am and 11:30 am. Sessions start on Sunday and end on Saturday for all campers. Children may be dropped off only if the YMCA staff and volunteers are ready to receive and supervise campers. Each camper must be signed in and out by a responsible adult.
Taking the Bus? Our camper bus leaves from 316 Huntington Avenue, Boston MA on Sunday at noon - please arrive there at 11:00 to check in. What do you recommend sending my camper while he is at Camp?
Campers love to get mail and packages at Camp! We encourage all of our parents to send mail to their camper at least once while they are at camp.
North Woods and Pleasant Valley Camps are now Package Free for all sessions. This means we are not delivering care packages to campers during their stay with us.
We encourage sending lots of letters! Real mail that your camper can hold on to and enjoy for years to come! Letters and flat envelopes are supported and welcome! (Please, no larger than 12” x 15” and ½ an inch thick)! Need some ideas for sending something different that meets our new mail policy? A letter from the family pet, mad libs, pre-stamped stationary, temporary tattoos, magic cards, be creative!
Is there a parent visiting day?
If your son is staying for 4 weeks, you certainly may come and visit during the middle weekend of his stay. Unfortunately, there is no visiting day during each 2 week session. This policy allows your child to adjust to camp and maximize the positive experience of camp.
Can my child call home?
We have found that calls home are very disruptive to the success of the Camp experience and in most cases, we do not allow calls home. Our experience has shown us that talking to home makes a campers adjustment to camp more difficult instead of easier. However, parents may call camp and talk with the director to check on their child's well-being and get an update about their experience. We encourage communication from parents to their camper in the form of letters or emails through 2016 BUNK1 , our camp email service.
How can I see pictures of my child while he is at Camp?
Our camp utilizes 2016 BUNK1 INFO for their email and picture service. You will find an easy, free registration process that allows you to view current camp pictures.
What do you do for Campers who celebrate their birthday at Camp?
We try to make it a special day for everyone who has a birthday at camp! First, it is announced at flag raising and we sing to each birthday boy. They receive a birthday cake during lunch or supper. The staff love celebrating birthdays at camp and go to great and creative lengths to make the day special for them!
Can I tip my child's counselor?
While we appreciate your gratitude, we ask you to please not tip your camper’s counselor. Instead, we encourage you to make a donation in their honor to the camp scholarship fund that allows more boys to have the wonderful experience that your son had. Another option for a "tip" is you could write a letter of reference for the staff member to utilize for upcoming college or job applications.
How is laundry handled?
We provide free laundry to all campers once per session. If your camper is staying for a second session or beyond, we take care of their laundry over the change-over. Be sure to label all of your camper's clothing so that any misplaced items gets returned to them.
What is sold in the Camp Store?
We sell souvenirs, such as hats, t-shirts, shorts, sweatshirts, games, stationery, water bottles, and other items. Items purchased at the camp store are deducted from the camper’s store account, which is filled upon registration or at check-in. WE DO NOT SELL FOOD, CANDY, DRINKS, BATTERIES OR FILM IN THE CAMP STORE.
Can my child bring electronics?
Electronics are not allowed at camp besides digital cameras. Electronic equipment tends to be expensive and in our natural, outdoor environment it is very hard to protect and keep electronic equipment safe. In addition, camp is a place to build friendships and interact with one another and not be tied to electronic equipment. For those reasons, cell Phones, kindles, I-PODS/MP3, tablets, computer games, expensive jewelry, pagers and stereos are not allowed. Please note that Camp is not responsible for lost or damaged items.
Can my child bring a cell phone?
Cell phones are strictly prohibited at Camp. We try to foster interpersonal skills during a camper’s stay at camp. Possession of a cell phone may result in dismissal without a refund. Please do not send your children to Camp with a cell phone(s). We apologize if this sounds difficult, however we have had many disruptive camp experiences caused by cell phones and we strictly enforce this policy.
