Event to feature Olympian Nancy Kerrigan & other Olympic Athletes, fun learning activities for all ages at the YMCA
Needham, MA – The spirit of the Olympic Movement will roll into Needham, as Charles River YMCA hosts a inspirational speech & relay races in celebration of Olympic Day.
The Y’s celebration will take place from 9:15 a.m. to 12 p.m. on June 29 at Greenes Field next to the YMCA on Great Plain Ave. Olympian Nancy Kerrigan & other Olympic Athletes will kick off the event by sharing stories of Olympic Games’ experience. The relay races will take place with Olympic Athletes engaging in the activities, photo opportunities & autographs Athletes and a brief snack will follow the presentation.
“We are excited to take part in Olympic Day and inspire kids in the Needham community,” said Jen Kelly, Sports Director. “YMCA is proud to support the Olympic Movement and are for healthy living, youth development, and social responsibility.”
The Charles River YMCA activity is one of more than 700 events taking place nationwide between June 22 and July 1. The events, designed to engage youth and promote the ideals of the Olympic movement, feature athlete appearances, family-friendly activities and interactive learning experiences. This year, the U.S. will almost double its 2011 Olympic Day event total.
Around the world, more than 160 countries take part in the annual celebration. Olympic Day, created in 1948 to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games, focuses on the Olympic values and ideals such as fair play, perseverance, respect and sportsmanship. In the U.S., Olympic Day events range from small gatherings to large, city-wide events.
