I'm quite an athletic person. I've played competitive sports all my life and I'm an intense cardio bunny. I take great pride in my physical fitness, but still when I hear the word "bootcamp", I always cringe in fear because it just sounds so military-like. However, I recently learned that bootcamp isn't just for macho men, superwoman, etc., but for everyone! Bootcamp is challenging, but it provides an amazing whole-body workout that builds strength and endurance. Really, think about it as a 60-minute one-stop-shop workout where time commitment is minimal in comparison to all the physical benefits that you will obtain.

Elaine from Oak Square YMCA After over 55 years of no exercise, I joined the YMCA of Greater Boston as a last resort to finally improve my health and fight my arthritis. At the time, I had started making many lifestyle changes: 1) eating a healthy diet, 2) taking mindfulness classes, 3) receiving regular massage and 4) increasing my sleep schedule from 5 hours to 7 hours a night. However, without exercise, my condition wasn’t improving at the rate that I needed and want it to. I finally bit the bullet and returned to the YMCA, where I had once been a member for an entire year and attended only once.

As a Personal Trainer and Group Exercise Instructor at the Burbank YMCA, I spend my time helping people keep their bodies strong and healthy through physical exercise and encouraging healthy lifestyle habits. However, as summer rolls around and we increase our outdoor activities with the sun's rays becoming stronger, a new focus and concern arises - proper skincare. I want to remind everyone that an important part of keeping fit and healthy this summer is including proper skincare initiatives.

After 100 years of successfully serving our vibrant community, the YMCA of Greater Boston is proud to announce the renovation of our historic Huntington Avenue Y. Our investment in change extends beyond the bricks and mortar and into the lives of Bostonians. The Y is a place for people of all ages, cultures and interests, and once completed, our new home will include exciting features guaranteed to make a difference in our community. When I was a child, my dad signed my family up for the local YMCA, swim lessons, skiing lessons and encouraged us to run road races. Thanks to these experiences, I became very passionate about exercise, which led me to study physical fitness during college. I have had the privilege of spending most of my adult life doing what I love; being a fitness instructor. Today, I would like to talk about Pilates – the exercise I’ve come to love most.

As summer approaches, many people think of aquatic recreational activities. Over the past years, we have witnessed an increase in swimming facilities and waterparks in the Greater Boston area. However, even with this increase in accessibility, many children still do not know how to swim, putting their safety at risk. It is important for us to remember that swimming is not just a fun summer activity, but an essential life skill.
