This summer, the Y of Greater Boston offered free memberships to teens, giving them unlimited access to 13 branches and all of the activities and privileges of membership.
Over 5,000 teens took advantage of the special “Get Summer” memberships at their local Y’s and enjoyed free trips, life building skills classes, teen exclusive group exercise classes, dances, open mic nights, leaderships opportunities and much more. “The Y is where I go with my friends, and this summer has been great because there was so much more offered” said East Boston teen Juan.
“The Y is where I go with my friends, and this summer has been great because there was so much more offered”
There were more than 500 free activities for teens to choose from. We also started up our first Y Teen’s Facebook page, giving teens the ability to check the Y’s online schedule of events as well as see pictures from other Ys and share stories.
The Y was not only a place to hang out and have fun, it was also a job site for over 500 teens. Teens worked in our summer programs, camps, preschools, administrative offices, health and wellness centers among other locations. They learned firsthand how a non-profit works to serve its community. Teens came away with new knowledge and some of them even were offered jobs for the upcoming school year. Some teens who worked at the Y this summer were part of professional development series that taught them money management, CPR, resume building and safe dating.
We hope that teens who took part in “Get Summer” decide that they Y is the place they want to be and continue to be Y members once school starts. Our Ys will offer many new and exciting opportunities to our youth this fall including sports leagues, college prep, leadership programs, mentorships, group exercise classes, tutoring, and social events to name a few.
