Preschool Swim Classes

(Ages 3-6)

These levels accommodate the preschool swimmer, ages three to six years. In the first level, parents swim with their children. Once their child has successfully accomplished the parent & child levels, they are then ready to move on to an independent swim class.

The Preschool levels build on the above skills and also include:

  • Stroke development
  • Rescue skills
  • Water sports and games
  • Moving the child toward independence in the water

Class Descriptions:

Pre-Pike (3 to 5 years): For the first time fearful swimmer that needs to build confidence in the water. Parents will not be present in this class.

Pike (3 to 6 years): For the beginner swimmer who needs to build skills and confidence in the water. At this level, children begin attending classes without their parents.  This level helps children develop safe pool behavior, adjust to the water, and develop independent movement in the water.  It is designed for new swimmers, teaching basic paddle stroke and kicking skills, pool safety, and comfort in holding their faces in the water while blowing bubbles and swimming.

Eel (3 to 6 years): For children who can swim independently in a horizontal position, with 2 bubbles or less on the front, back and side for a minimum of 10 yards.  Children must also be comfortable putting their face in the water. This advanced beginner level reinforces Pike skills.  It is for children who are comfortable in the water.  They are taught to flutter kick, dive, float, and perform the progressive paddle stroke.  Children can swim across the pool without assistance by the end of this level.

Ray (3 to 6 years): For children who can swim without a flotation device in a horizontal position on their front, back and side for part or all of the class time.  Children will be introduced to rotary breathing and overarm recovery. At this level children review previous skills, improve stroke skills, build endurance by swimming on their front and back, and learn to tread water and perform more progressive diving skills.  Children can swim across the pool on their front and back without assistance by the end of this level.

Starfish (3 to 6 years):For children who can swim without flotation in a horizontal position for the entire class on their front, back and side.  Children will work on developing their front crawl and backstroke skills.  Children at this level review previously learned skills and refine their crawl and back strokes and floating skills.  They also learn underwater swimming skills.  Children can swim the length of the pool on the front and back at the end of this level.
