My Y Story
My name is Sonia. I was facing a difficult problem with my eldest son and almost lost my job trying to deal with his problems. My two youngest children were in Y pre-school and after-school programs, so I often talked with Gladys in the Y’s business office. She speaks Spanish, so I turned to her when I had questions and we became friends. Gladys listened patiently as I told her about my son and offered to help, even though my son was not in a Y program.
Gladys called my son’s school and spoke with the headmaster, and helped me connect with the school’s guidance counselor to develop a plan of action for my son. It was a complicated process, involving a lot of paperwork, which Gladys helped interpret and complete. I’m happy to say my son is back on track, attending classes regularly, and doing really well. He recently told me, “Mom, I don’t want the younger boys to go through what I did, and I want to be a role model for them.” As a single mom, I had no one to turn to for help, but Gladys and the Y were there. Without the Y and people like Gladys who really care, I’m not sure what would have happened to my son.
