The Hartford Awards YMCA Achievers $10,000

The YMCA of Greater Boston is one of 30 Ys selected to receive a grant for $10,000 from The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc. to enhance its youth educational programming.  The grant will support the Pathways program of the YMCA Achievers.

Pathways is a curriculum-based educational enrichment program that prepares and motivates high school students for college and career.

The program is designed to elevate student awareness about college and career, and to improve access to higher education resources and opportunities.

The Pathways program components include:  weekly workshops on a variety of college related topics, such as college admissions, financial aid and testing requirements; mentoring support provided by adult achievers who facilitate students' exploration of careers options, and exposure to the workplace.  Students are assisted in the college application process and the financial aid application process.  Several workshops are dedicated to college lifestyle topics such as: time management, managing your money, living with roommates and campus social life.

The Hartford’s grant is part of a $300,000 gift to YMCA of the USA, the resource office for the nation’s Ys, in recognition of The Hartford’s bicentennial.

“Dedication to community has always been a part of The Hartford’s culture,” said Bill Donovan, Regional Vice President. “The Y’s national scope and focus on education provides an opportunity to deepen our commitment to local communities, like Boston, and enhance educational value not only to children, but to their families as well.”

As part of its bicentennial celebration, The Hartford is recognizing the contributions of its valued partners, including its longest-tenured agents with 50 or more years of service. “We are making each contribution to a local Y on behalf of those agents in Boston,” Donovan said.

“The Y has a longstanding commitment to youth development,” said Kelley Rice, spokesperson for the YMCA of Greater Boston. “This generous support from The Hartford will help us strengthen that commitment by enhancing our Pathways program, and we look forward to demonstrating meaningful impact in the months and years to come.”
