Monday September 10th was a great day for the Wang YMCA of Chinatown and surrounding communities that joined. U.S. Olympian and three time Gold Medalist; Heather O’Reilly returned to the Wang YMCA of Chinatown after previously visiting prior to the 2012 London Olympics.
Heather’s most recent visit was in conjunction with Athletes for Hope, a non-profit that seeks to connect professional athletes to charities throughout the country. For the past four years, they have done an athlete national week of service and remembrance around September 11th to honor our fallen heroes. Heather’s main theme of the day was teamwork and kindness to others.
Heather spoke with local children and members ranging from age 6-13 about her Olympic story and the importance of working together as a team. With just over 50 in attendance, Heather, a star on the U.S. Women’s National and Olympic Soccer Team captivated the audience with a small talk highlighting her most recent journey to London and bringing home the gold. After fielding questions Heather and volunteers from the South End Soccer Association put on a 30 minute clinic where the kids could show their skills as well as learn a thing or two from the Olympic Star.
The Wang YMCA is very proud to have a role model like Heather speak to our kids not once but twice. To have an athlete be so available to field questions, share her story and teach them a move or two is an experience they will never forget. Thank you Heather and you are always welcome at the YMCA!
