Celebrating the past... Building for the future

Since 1951, the West Roxbury YMCA has served as a center of community life to one of Boston's most vibrant residential areas. Now, with more than 60,000 households living just minutes away and over 6,500 active members, we must prepare the Y for a major expansion to meet the needs of future generations.

West Roxbury Campaign Forging Ahead

The YMCA General Board of Directors and President and CEO, Kevin Washington, are making rebuilding and expanding the West Roxbury Y one of their highest priorities.   In fact, the Board is supporting a corporate match of 2:1 so that we can begin work as soon as possible.  The Y plans to raise $1,500,000 in the community.

We are excited by the community’s interest in the new plans and we have already hit several milestones.  To date our accomplishments include raising $4.5mm dollars for the West Roxbury building; investing over $2.4mm in the Blind Aid Building located on Centre St.; purchasing the Post Office Building – where our new plan will include a fresh approach to Centre St that will feature public open space; moving Kids Stop Early Education Center to 1980 Centre St to strengthen the Y presence on Center St.; and reducing the number of construction phases from 4 to 2.

We are also very excited to announce that since October we have received a grant from Blue Hills Bank for $100,000; a $50,000 pledge from Alan MacKinnon, a West Roxbury YMCA Advisory Board member who made his gift at our first home reception hosted by Thomas and Barbara Van Dyke on November 30th as well as a $25,000 pledge from Michael Daley, a member of the General Board of Directors and a member of the West Roxbury Capital Campaign Committee.

With several upcoming home receptions set for 2012; presentations scheduled with a number of banks and corporations; and personal tours planned with numerous individual donors we are well on our way to revitalizing an even stronger presence in the West Roxbury community.
