YMCA of Greater Boston -After School Educator-Substitute

Position: After School Education- Substitute
Reports to: Site Director
Location: Designated Boston Public School- Roxbury, Dorchester, East Boston, West Roxbury, Hyde Park & Brighton

Hours:  3-4 hours per day as needed

Salary – Starting range: $11.00-14.00

General Responsibilities

The Group Leader is a part-time professional committed to represent the YMCA in a manner that aligns with the mission and goals of the YMCA of Greater Boston and partnering educational institutions. Under the direction of the program Site Director, the Group Leader plans and implements classroom curriculum, communicates information to families, and maintains a safe, healthy, warm, engaging, and attractive environment. Age-appropriate activities should provide for growth in academics and social emotional development.


  1. Keep safety of children as a first priority
  2. Provide students with homework/academic support in both English and Spanish
  3. Use positive methods of child guidance
  4. Supervise children to ensure safety and appropriate behavior and manage transitions smoothly
  5. Work to meet daily duties/needs of the program, and to be responsible for making sure that materials are ready for use and put away at the end of the day
  6. Greet all parents and update them on children’s progress
  7. Participate in at least twelve (12) hours of professional development per year
  8. Abide by established EEC/YMCA school age policies, procedures, regulations, and guidelines
  9. Perform other duties as required by supervisor


  1. At least 18 years of age and meet the EEC requirements for Group Leader.
  2. High school degree required; some college preferred
  3. Bilingual and biliterate in Spanish
  4. Previous experience providing classes/programs/activities for youth
  5. Knowledge of youth development principles
  6. Effective leadership and group management skills
  7. Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  8. Dedication to the pursuit of education (for self and students)
  9. Excitement and positive attitude toward working with children
  10. Commitment to the philosophy and goals of the YMCA / BPS

Effect on End Results:  Effectiveness is measured by:

  1. The degree to which implemented activities connect to school day learning
  2. Positive parental/child evaluation of program
  3. The degree to which children are provided with positive channels in which to grow, learn, and develop
