Position: Infant / Toddler Lead Certified Teacher

Job Classification:  Full/part-time/seasonal  

Branch: North Suburban YMCA (Woburn, MA)                

Reports to: Director

Pay rate: $12-$14/hr.

 

General Function:

To represent the YMCA personally, professionally and in  a manner in accordance with the mission and goals of the YMCA.  Under the direction of the Director, the Lead Teacher plans and implements classroom curriculum, maintains children’s records, communicates information to families, and maintains a safe, healthy, warm, engaging, and attractive environment.  Age appropriate activities should provide for growth in skill, self-awareness, group relations, and character development.  By conducting themselves in a caring, responsible, honest, and respectful manner, the Lead Teacher is a role model for children and adults.

 

Know How:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age or have a high school diploma or equivalent and meet the requirements for Lead Teacher (102 CMR7.21 (2)c).
  • Have a card issued by the Department of Early Education and Care documenting qualifications.
  • Must be First Aid and CPR certified within the first 6 months of employment.
  • Must have skills in Working with Families, Conflict Resolution and Public Relations.
  • Knowledge of group process - must agree to work in harmony with other staff.
  • Must be committed to the philosophy and goals of the YMCA.
  • Must possess effective leadership skills and crisis management skills.
  • Must possess and utilize excellent organizational skills.
  • Attend Corporate training on Blood Borne Pathogens and Sexual Harassment within the first 60 days of employment.
  • Attend corporate training on Child Abuse Prevention within the first 60 days of employment.           

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Keep safety of children as a first priority.  Emphasizes personal safety and emotional well-being with the children, families, and other staff at all times.
  2. By personal example, helps to interpret the quality of the YMCA character values of children, staff, and families.  Must be a positive healthy role model.
  3. Uses positive and constructive methods of behavior management and ensures that all staff does the same.
  4. Supervise children to ensure safety and appropriate behavior and manage transitions smoothly.
  5. To work with the Director in the design of the classroom space to include input from the   Teachers and Assistants.  To be responsible for making sure that materials are ready for use and put away at the end of the day.
  6. To assess the children with input of the Teacher and Assistants; every 3 months for Infants and  every 6 months for Toddlers. The Lead Teacher will be expected to observe children and perform specific assessment items that will provide information on the child’s developmental level.  The Lead Teacher will write assessment reports.
  7. The Lead Teacher will work closely with the teacher to design a curriculum that meets the needs of each child in the classroom.  The Lead Teacher will be involved in the planning and       implementation of the curriculum.
  8. The Lead Teacher will be responsible setting up a system for writing daily notes for families.  These notes should reflect the child’s daily experiences in the program.
  9. Participate in 20 hours of training per year and 25% must be in the area of children with special needs.
  10. Attend staff meetings.
  11. To perform chore duties as scheduled at the program, which rotate among staff. 
  12. Contact the Director with a minimum of 2 hours notice of an absence.
  13. Is Accountable for all children assigned at all times.
  14. Must adhere to the rules, regulations and procedures set forth by the YMCA of Greater Boston, The Branch and the Department of Early Education and Care.
  15. The Lead Teacher will be responsible for the supervision and training of the teacher and any interns or volunteers place in  his/her class.
  16. The Lead Teacher will be expected to assist the Director in evaluating the staff yearly.
  17. Encouraged to participate in the branch Reach Out Campaign.

 

Effect on End Result:  Effectiveness will be measured by -

  1. A warm, engaging environment for children, staff and families which meet quality standard and EEC licensing requirements.
  2. A developmentally sound program for children which provides positive channels to grow, learn    and develop to their full potential.
  3. A program which meets community needs, in a manner consistent with the YMCA mission.
  4. A fiscally sound program which meets stated enrollment/staff levels.
