    My Y Story

My brother Dan, a husband and father of three boys, had kidney failure while visiting during the Christmas Holiday in 2007.  I was a match to donate one of my kidneys to Dan so a kidney transplant was planned at Mass General Hospital 5 days before the 2008 Boston Marathon, which I was registered to run.

After the transplant, we reached out to Burbank YMCA to see if there was a way we could use the facilities during our recovery. Dan and I were both out of work for 6 weeks after the transplant and Dan had been out of work for six months prior to the surgery for dialysis and physical therapy. We both had to watch our spending.  The YMCA allowed us to use the facility to do our own physical therapy.

Dan’s boys were also able to get some personal training by Dan, one of the trainers, at a reduced rate.  The boy’s school sports were a vital part of their education experience so coming to the Y to stay active was important to them.

As a result of our YMCA membership, Dan’s 12 week mandatory post-transplant evaluation period was greatly reduced.  Therefore, Dan was allowed to return to Texas.  I was able to go back to work in six weeks with great confidence that I was at no risk for any injury associated with the transplant. April 15th will be three years since our transplant. Since that time, Dan and I ran the Boston Marathon together.  Dan also completed one other marathon and I finished a 24 hour ultra-race.  We are thankful to the YMCA, our families, and friends for our recovery!
