Y Stories

Lily's Tree

  • The Y’s Service Club sells Christmas trees as a fund for the Burbank YMCA.  This past December a friend of a Y Service club member purchased a tree to be donated to a family in the Burbank Y community who might otherwise not have one.

Youth Development

  • "With this new found confidence under his belt, my son is also loving the YMCA camp while rock-climbing, playing on the YMCA basketball team (scoring baskets!) and constantly meeting new friends.  His academic grades have come up 2 grades and his social skills have given him a lifetime of good feelings!"

Healthy Living

  • "Shortly after joining my daughter was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome and spent a good part of that year in hospitals and rehab.  When this former healthy young woman was discharged in a wheelchair, we were just so overwhelmed.  The Y became an integral part of her determination to get back on her feet."

Social Responsibility

  • "After the [kidney] transplant, we reached out to Burbank YMCA to see if there was a way we could use the facilities during our recovery. Dan and I were both out of work for 6 weeks after the transplant and Dan had been out of work for six months prior to the surgery for dialysis and physical therapy. We both had to watch our spending."

Betty's Story

  •

In 2003 Betty was run over by a truck multiple times and broke every bone in her body.  She was in a coma for 2 ½ months and rehab for 9 months after that.  Betty’s daughter lives in Reading and she became her guardian – Betty says “this is the best thing that could have happened to me”.

Mac's Story

  •

Aviation Structural Mechanic Chief Petty Officer Fran “Mac” McNeil was in the Military for 22 years; in 2003 he was injured badly in an accident while on the flight deck of the U.S.S. George Washington Navy Aircraft Carrier.
